Here at Herbs Spice & Everything Nice, we make ALL of our products, straight from the teas to the skin care to the body care. All of them. Why? Because we believe in quality natural products that enhance the skin and body's natural beauty without harsh additives. One important step in natural skin care that cannot be missed though is a preservative. Again, why, you may ask? Natural skin care products are made of 100% pure oils, 100% therapeutic grade essential oils and water. And ANYTHING with water in it is susceptible to m o l d. You don't want that in your products...trust me.
There are natural preservatives such as grapefruit seed extract, which you'll see listed in some of our face care ingredients. GSE is wonderful in that not only does it add a little preserving-power to the product, but it's full of natural antioxidants as well as antifungal properties. It is also wonderful for sensitive skin. However, GSE cannot be the sole preservative in a cosmetic product, it will still allow mold to grow through.
At HSEN, we also add Otiphen. This preservative is vegan, paraben free & formaldehyde free. Though it is not a "natural" occurring substance in the body, research dictates it one of the safest options for natural skin care and cosmetic products. Not only does it help the products to have a smooth feel when applied to the skin, it works wonderfully with oil-based products, such as our skin care, and helps all the ingredients work together to deliver their maximum benefits while preventing the development of bacteria or mold in your cosmetics. From my own personal research, Otiphen has seemingly been used in almost all skin care product companies that market themselves as natural that I have come upon. As we've stated before, we do not sell anything that we do not use ourselves and we are always transparent when it comes to what goes in to our products. We are a 100% natural based company that makes all of its products by hand in small batches to ensure their absolute quality.
